In 1989 this painting was purchased for 48 million pesetas at an auction held in the Ritz Hotel in Madrid.
The painting depicts the man who was to become Minister of the Marine under Charles IV of Spain.
It can be dated between 1783 and 1789, since it represents the sitter in the uniform of a rear admiral.
In this three-quarter length work the subject is dressed in a dark frock coat and waistcoat. In his left hand he is holding a document, while the right hand is hidden inside his waistcoat.
As in the majority of Goya's portraits, he is pictured against a dark background which highlights the figure. His face, painted in lighter hues, looks directly and firmly at the viewer.
A copy of the painting is housed in the Naval Museum in Madrid.
