History linked to the drawing on the front (The street): Javier Goya, Madrid, 1828; Mariano Goya, Madrid, 1854; Valentín Carderera, Madrid, c. 1861; Mariano Carderera, Madrid, 1880; Museo del Prado, 1886.
However, as the sheet was glued to a second support, this sketch drawn on the reverse was not made public until 2012.
Drawn on the back of The Street is a sanguine sketch of the volumes of the Royal Astronomical Observatory of Madrid by the architect Juan de Villanueva, whose construction began in 1790.
One of the most frequent conservation problems in the Museo del Prado's collection of Goya's drawings is the presence of old mounts that damage the stability of the paper, causing rippling and yellowing, or mounts that prevent the whole sheet from being seen.
In this case, a second support adhered to the back of The Street, 1800-1808 had concealed the existence of this drawing.
