This drawing, along with the other preparatory drawings for this series, formed part of the Carderera Collection and was subsequently acquired by the Prado Museum where it is currently housed.
In this preparatory drawing for print no. 54, Appeals are in vain (Clamores en vano), it is clear that Goya had a specific design in mind when preparing the final piece.
One of the few changes implemented in the print is that the figure sat next to another reclining figure with their back to the viewer in the foreground has a bandage on their head and a more skeletal appearance. Likewise, in the print some of the figures - such as the one lying down or some of those sat next to the house - are notably darker, rendered with abundant use of aquatint.
