MP Inventory DRAWINGS no. 189 (stamped, reverse, upper right corner)
Watermark: "MANUEL SERRA" (half left)
The drawing was inherited in 1828 by Javier Goya, the painter's son, and in 1854 by Mariano Goya y Goicoechea, the artist's grandson. It was subsequently owned by Valentín Carderera (ca. 1861) and Mariano Carderera (ca. 1880). In 1886 it was acquired from Mariano Carderera by the Directorate General of Public Instruction and was assigned to the Prado Museum, where it entered on 12 November 1886.
Preparatory drawing for the Follie Kidnapping horse. The sheet shows the mark of having passed through the press, although the work differs in many respects from the final print.
The woman and the horse are quite similar to those in the engraving, although she seems more agitated and desperate in this preparatory drawing. A man lies dead behind the horse, giving meaning to the image, as it links it to the legend of the bewitched man turned into a horse and in love with a woman, whom he abducts after killing her husband. The landscape is also different, as the scene takes place on the edge of a forest and the two monstrous beings in the background are not yet present.
