Historia
This work belonged to the collection of Ramón Garreta. It was acquired by the Spanish State following the advice of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and was entrusted to the Prado Museum.
Análisis artístico
In a dark room we can see a number of figures gathered around a possessed man. He is on the floor with his arms outstretched and his head thrown back. On his chest we can see the sanbenito garment that the Inquisition used to drape on the condemned. A priest is anointing him with holy water.
Lafuente Ferrari mentions two copies of this work, one by Eugenio Lucas (as well as a drawing by the same artist), and another from the hand of Mariano Fortuny.
