Charles IV
This work, together with its companion piece, Queen María Luisa, entered the collection of the Prado Museum in 1911, from the Finance Ministry. From 1925 to 1961 they were both stored at the Museum of San Telmo, in San Sebastián, and were moved to the Museum of Zaragoza in 1972.
This is one of the replicas that Goya made of the portraits of King Charles IV and Queen María Luisa de Parma to mark the coronation of December 1788.
In this three-quarter-length portrait, the king is shown standing, life size. His head, wearing a white, dusted wig, stands out clearly against the dark background. He is dressed in French-style court attire, with a richly embroidered, blue velvet dress coat, lined with white satin, waistcoat, breeches, white ruff and lace cuffs. Around his waist he wears a ceremonial sword and on his chest are the necklace and red sash of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the blue sash of French Order of the Holy Ghost and the insignia and original sash of the Order of Charles III. On the right, in the background, we can see the two royal symbols: the crown and the ermine robe. Completing the decoration is a striking, and rather ostentatious, yellowish-green drape, arranged diagonally across the composition.
Some researchers have declared this painting to be a workshop piece, possibly with the intervention of Agustín Esteve.
