Historia

See Sad presentiments of what must come to pass.

This drawing, just like the set of preparatory drawings made for the other prints in the series, formed part of the Carderera collection before arriving at the Prado Museum, where it is currently housed.

Análisis artístico

Goya has carefully drawn the naked corpses, precisely capturing the musculature and the postures of the lifeless bodies that occupy the same positions in the preparatory drawing as in the finished print. The two figures in the background, who are looking at this macabre spectacle whilst covering their noses to keep out the smell, also coincide in the two works.

The fundamental difference between the preparatory drawing and the etching resides in the way in which the artist has represented the sky. In the drawing it is much darker, with just a blank space left around the standing figures. The rest of the paper is covered with continuous, thick horizontal lines, suggesting that the scene is taking place in darkness, something which was not carried over to the final print.
