This drawing, along with the set of preparatory drawing for the rest of the prints in this series, formed part of the Carderera Collection and was subsequently acquired by the Prado Museum where it is currently housed.
The preparatory drawing Goya produced for print no. 53, There was nothing to be done and he died (Espiró sin remedio), is very precisely executed. The first difference between the two pieces is that the drawing is much clearer than the print owing to the use of aquatint for the sky and ground in the latter, which creates a dark, unsettling atmosphere. However, the figures depicted in the centre of the drawing display no differences from those in the print. The only difference lies in the omission from the print of some sketchy, superficial figures depicted in the right-hand side of the background in the drawing.
