Felipe III ("Philip III", in ink, in the centre of the drawing). Pintado por Velázquez ("Painted by Velázquez", lower left-hand corner) and Grabado por Goya ("Etched by Goya", lower right-hand corner).
This work previously belonged to the Ceán and Carderera collections. It was acquired by José Lázaro sometime between 1922 and 1928.
This preparatory drawing, made for the engraving of Philip III, is remarkable for its wide variety of greys and its magnificent execution. Goya has been extremely careful to copy the original work precisely. He does not make any changes to Velázquez's painting, and painstakingly reproduces the clothing worn by Philip III, which serves to identify the royal personage. He similarly draws the horse's mane in great detail and strives to capture the effects of the light so masterfully painted by the Andalusian artist.
Stuck onto thick paper, the imprint of the plate is still visible in the upper left-hand corner.
