D a. Fran ca. Vicenta Chollet y / Cavallero / Por Goya, año 1806 ("Doña Francisca Vicenta Chollet y Cavallero, By Goya, 1806", on the back of the sofa).
This work used to be in the Cepero collection, in Seville, and was later in the M. Groult collection in Paris.
The only thing we know about this upper-middle-class lady is her name.
She is depicted here seated in a large armchair upholstered in crimson velvet, in front of a black background. She wears a grey, empire-line dress of expensive cloth decorated with a floral design. To conceal her ample bosom, Goya has painted on top a see-through lace that almost joins up with the long necklace that is wrapped several times around her neck. Both of her arms are covered by long white gloves, giving her an air of elegance. Her hair is worn up, topped by a silver diadem, with some curls falling down over her shoulders.
On her lap is a dog wearing a collar which Goya has rendered with great verism.
The subject's somewhat distant gaze gives us a sensation of melancholy.
