In the Banco de San Carlos archives it says that payment for this work was made on 15 October 1787: "2,200 reales de vellón paid to the Painter Fran.co Goya as follows: 2,000 reales de vellón for the portrait he has made of D. Fran.co Xabier de Larumbe, Honorary Director General of the National Bank, and 200 paid to the gilder of the Frame created for the same portrait according to the receipt made out on this day."
Francisco Javier de Larrumbe (or Larumbe) was War Commissioner and Honorary Director General of the Banco de San Carlos, as well as being a Knight of the Order of Santiago.
In this three-quarter length portrait the subject is shown with his face turned slightly towards his right. He is wearing a white wig and is dressed in a black frock coat with embroidered edging, a red waistcoat and white shirt with frills at the neck and sleeves. On his chest he bears the Cross of Charles III, while under his arm he is carrying a tricorn hat. In his right hand, which is executed in great detail, he holds a walking cane with a gold top. The background is almost a flat wash with very faint highlights designed to give a sense of depth.
The sitter's slightly rosy face gazes at the viewer with an enigmatic, cold and calculating stare.
