Historia

Acquired by the engraver Vicente Peleguer (Valencia, 1793- Madrid, 1865), perhaps directly from Goya; sale of the Peleguer Collection, Paris, 1867, cat. 36; sale of the Anatole-Auguste Hulot Collection (+1891), Georges Petit Gallery, Paris, 1892, cat. 135, to Camile Groult; Groult's successors; sale Charpentier Gallery, Paris, 1952, to George Ortiz (+ 2013); The George Ortiz Collection.

Análisis artístico

This is a sketch of a tapestry cartoon that has not been preserved.  Two young men and a dog are trying to get a frightened cat down from a tree. In the background are other young men and a landscape background.

The painting is arranged in an ascending diagonal and breaks with the triangular pattern of Goya's other tapestry compositions. The rapid brushstrokes and the blurred effect through the application of stains are clear signs that this is a sketch.

The backlighting in the foreground is reminiscent of some of Goya's best cartoons, such as The Sunshade, and the light is one of the protagonists in many of these works.
