On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).
Line of provenance of this drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.
Preparatory drawing for the Caprice 57. The filiation. The creative process leading up to this Caprice is one of the richest.
The first idea appears in the gouache Witches to Fly (B.59) in Notebook B, in much more concise forms, but with the hermaphroditic mask which underlines the autograph inscription La apunta p.r ermafrodita. Followed by Dream no. 11. Caricature masks which pointed to their meaning..., of a very elaborate workmanship and already reported on copper plate, although no proof has been preserved. The hermaphroditic mask between the legs of the young bride takes on an even more provocative air, which may have led Goya to remove this plate from the engraved series.
He resumes the composition in this red wash, reducing the crowd attending the scene and eliminating the monkey and all sexual allusions. The drawing was cut out on a new plate and, by means of important works executed directly on the copper, Goya reached the final stage of his plastic expression.
