Historia

See Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, Painter.

Two preparatory drawings of this engraving have survived  (1) and (2).

Análisis artístico

Two women are caught in the street at night by a strong gust of wind that lifts their clothes. One of them is in the foreground and the wind has moved her clothes, which now cover her head. We can see, however, her knee-length legs. Goya tries to focus the viewer's attention by capturing their light-coloured dresses which contrast sharply with the darkness of the background.

By using highly burnished aquatint, the darkness is achieved and a gloomy stormy light is created.

Three of the manuscripts on The Caprices provide practically the same explanation: that it is a night when inclement weather makes it difficult for the prostitutes to work. It is possible that the Aragonese painter was also referring to the dangers of this profession, as stated in the manuscript in the Museo Nacional del Prado, which reads as follows: "To this kind of work are exposed the young girls who do not want to stay at home".

Conservación

The plate is preserved in poor conditions in the National Chalcography (no.  207).
