María / Del rosario / La Tirana / Por Goya / 1794 ("María / Del rosario / La Tirana / By Goya / 1794", on the paper she is holding in her left hand).
This painting passed from the collection of the Count of Villagonzalo to a private collection.
María del Rosario Fernández was a famous theatre actress from Seville who was born in Madrid in 1755. She was nicknamed "La Tirana" because her husband Francisco Castellanos - also a dramatic actor - often played the role of the tyrant in plays.
The painting shows the her at half-length, wearing an elegant white dress embellished with lace and a shawl which covers her chest. She wears her hair loose and long, adorned with flowers. Her right hand is hidden, while in the left she carries a piece of paper bearing her name and the artist's signature.
Five years later, Goya was to paint another, full-length portrait of this actress.
