Análisis artístico

The subject of this full-length portrait is shown in a natural landscape, identified as the gardens at the palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso. She is wearing a long black lace and gauze dress, with a low neckline, partially concealed by a sheer fabric. Following the fashion of the court "majismo", she is also wearing a mantilla, held in place by a large pink bow. On her feet are a pair of white pointed shoes whilst in her right hand is a closed fan, held in front of her chest. Both of her hands are adorned with a number of rings.

A letter sent from María Luisa to Godoy on 24 September 1799 makes mention of this portrait's execution.

In around 1799-1800, Agustín Esteve made two copies of this painting which, together with two more of the companion piece, Charles IV in Hunting Gear, belonged to Manuel Godoy.
