Sale Paris, Drouot, 1877, lot B26; Baron Hugo Rudolf von Stumm; Magnus von Kühlmann, Schloss Ramholz, Schlüchtern, until 2002. In 2018, the identification of the character was publicly presented, based on the characteristics of his physiognomy, and the attribution of the painting to Goya, based on its stylistic particularities.
Martín Zapater y Clavería (Zaragoza, 1747-1803) made an important wealth as a merchant and landowner. An enlightened and ennobled bourgeois (1789), he was a member of the Zaragoza City Council, founding member and partner of the Royal Aragonese Economic Society of Friends of the Country of Aragon (1776) and member of the Royal Academy of Nobles and Fine Arts of San Luis of Zaragoza (1793). He is known, above all, for his close friendship with Goya, as demonstrated by the epistolary relationship they maintained, a fundamental source for the knowledge of the painter's life and personality.
This work reveals Goya's technical excellence and prodigious skill in capturing the strong personality of his friend Zapater, who was still young and less distinguished than in his mature years. It is a bust portrait, in which the green suit and tousled hair stand out, the figure seems almost three-dimensional cut out on a neutral background.
He portrayed him on two other occasions in 1790 and 1797. See Martín Zapater y Clavería (2) y Martín Zapater y Clavería (2)
