This drawing, along with the set of preparatory drawings for the rest of the prints in this series, formed part of the Carderera Collection and subsequently part of the Prado Museum, where it is currently housed.
There are few differences between this preparatory drawing and the final print. The most significant difference is the small sacks that can be seen on the left-hand side, which may contain the corpses of children that do not appear in the final print. The drawing also lacks the emotional intensity of the print in which the pile of corpses is theatrically illuminated almost as though they are on a stage.
Goya made this drawing very precisely, lingering over the details that subsequently were to appear on the print.
