On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).
Line of provenance of this drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.
Preparatory drawing for the Caprice 74. Don't shout, silly
Matilla explains how in this drawing Goya shows the libidinous desires of the monks and satirizes the monastic orders under the guise of scenes of goblins, in order not to arouse censorship. The two characters that appear as goblins in the print are depicted in the drawing as a kind of little devils.
In addition to these changes, we should add the change of position of the woman, who goes from being hooded and looking at the goblins in the drawing, to being with her hair loose and in a twisted posture, moving away from the two monks, who approach her to silence her in the print.
