The Duke of Osuna
The payment order made out to Goya for this portrait and its companion painting of the Duke and Duchess of Osuna, dated 16 July 1785, is for the sum of "4,800 reales de vellón for two portraits he has painted of Their Excellencies." Since the work was sold from the Osunas' collection in 1896, it has formed part of the Harris Collection in London and the collection of Mark Oliver of Jedburgh (England).
According to Gassier, this portrait of the Duke is sincere and natural, executed "in the English style".
The figure has been placed against a neutral background and is dressed in a frock coat and waistcoat which cover his right hand. His left hand rests on a walking cane. His pale face looks directly at the viewer with a serious air and intelligent gaze.
This painting forms a pair with the portrait of his wife, María Josefa de la Soledad Alonso Pimentel, condesa-duquesa de Benavente, duquesa de Osuna, both of whom were important patrons of Goya.
