This drawing, like the set of preparatory drawings for the rest of the engravings in the series, was part of the Carderera collection and subsequently passed to the Prado National Museum, where it is now kept.
Compared to the engraving, this preparatory drawing has some differences. The objects surrounding the seated monk do not yet appear in it, and neither the religious elements nor the masks that are present in the print have been designed. Furthermore, the disturbing figures in the background of the print are two silhouettes that Goya has placed on the right. They are two well-defined shadows that are perceived more clearly than in the print.
The drawing is, in general terms, ostensibly clearer than the engraving.
