Historia

On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).

Line of provenance of this drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.

Análisis artístico

This is the preparatory drawing for Caprice nº 8, What did they take her away, which, in turn, is inspired by drawing nº 61 of Notebook B, Caricatures. It is his Saint's Day.

This drawing does not differ significantly from the engraving, as in both cases two hooded men can be seen forcibly holding a young woman, who throws her head back and makes a gesture of anguish. The first holds her by the waist and the second by the ankles.

In the background of the drawing, however, there is a landscape with trees that disappears in the engraving, where the painter has preferred to create an absolutely neutral background in which nothing detracts from the figures in the scene.
