This work formed part of the collection of the Museum of Zaragoza from 1 October 1998 to 1 March 2000.
This portrait is probably a sketch for the definitive equestrian portrait of General Palafox, which is housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid.
It is a bust-length portrait. The sitter is elegantly dressed in a military frock coat with all the trimmings and medals. He is wearing the Great Cross of Saint Ferdinand, awarded to him for military merit in the field; the medal was created in 1811 and awarded to Palafox following his imprisonment in France. He also wears the Great Cross of Saint Hermengild, created in 1814 by Ferdinand VII to recognize merit and loyalty of soldiers in the field, the Maltese Cross and the Cross of Calatrava.
The facial features seem to be those of the general in his youth.
For more information see portrait of General Palafox.
