Historia

We know nothing about the circumstances which surround the commissioning of this series of four painting depicting the Fathers of the Church, which today are found in different locations (see Saint Ambrose).

The painting depicting Saint Augustine belonged to the collection of Lucas Moreno in Paris, and was later acquired by Eugenio del Bayo, Bilbao and was subsequently inherited by its current owner.

Análisis artístico

Saint Augustine is depicted sitting down, wearing a bishop's miter and clothed in a warm-coloured cope. These colours create a strong contrast with the dark background. The saint is shown in prayer, looking heavenwards with an open hand, while with the other he writes in his book. The execution of his beard and the enraptured quality of his gaze are particularly noteworthy.

For a full history of this series of four paintings, see Saint Ambrose.
