Historia

See Sad presentiments of what must come to pass.

This drawing, just like the set of preparatory drawings made for the other prints in the series, formed part of the Carderera collection before arriving at the Prado Museum, where it is currently housed.

Análisis artístico

Goya has worked carefully and precisely on this preparatory drawing. His depictions of both the anatomies of the naked corpses that are being stripped of their clothes and the men carrying out this act are very detailed. In the figures arranged in the foreground we can make out no major differences between this drawing and the finished print. On the left-hand side, however, in the background, the artist seems to have vaguely sketched out here in the drawing a battle scene, an element which is absent from the subsequent etching. Also in the drawing, behind the French soldier who is pulling off the clothes belonging to one of the corpses in the centre, we can make out a large dark smudge, probably a reference to the large tree trunk featured in the print.
