Stamp of the Prado Museum, (stamped in purple ink, on verso, upper right-hand corner)
On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).
Line of provenance of this drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.
Preparatory drawing for Caprice 71. If the sun rises, we leave.
Sitting on a bulging sack containing, presumably, the spoils of children. The Brujo Mayor gives his last orders to four of his fellows, pointing to the sky from where the signal to leave will soon come.
Above the infernal group, Goya has sketched the silhouette of a winged vampire, which in the etching will be transformed into a menacing shadow cast against a background of starry sky.
