Análisis artístico

Goya based the drawing we are concerned with here on the drawing in the Album of Madrid or Notebook B, Merry Caricature (B.63) which, in turn, served as a source of inspiration for Caprice no. 13, They Are Hot .

As in the drawing in Notebook B, Goya again focused on the excesses of the clergy. With respect to the drawing in the notebook, he eliminated from the sketch the phallic-shaped nose held on a kind of small crutch, although in this case he introduced a macabre detail, as a layman without a tonsure carries a fountain with a human head that he is going to serve to the friars. This aspect is not perceived in the other preparatory drawing or in the engraving with the same clarity as in this case.
