On the gestation, history and aims of the series known as Dreams, a set of preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see Dream 1: Universal Language.
Line of provenance of the present drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.
A preparatory drawing for Caprice 65. Where's Mummy Going? in which, according to Matilla, four figures are depicted accompanied by animals of the night, such as the owl, who, together with two other figures, hold a large woman who appears naked in the centre of the scene. Meanwhile, another figure coils around her back.
Sebastián de Covarrubias in his Treasury of the Castilian Language (1674), defines Dropsy as: "a disease of watery humour that swells the whole body. Sometimes it is caused by greed, because no matter how much a person drinks, he does not quench his thirst, nor does the greedy person, no matter how much he acquires, quench his greed".
The drawing shows an imprint of the foil print left by the pressure of the press during the intaglio process on the 210 x 167 mm copperplate, as well as vertical stipples measuring 26 mm.
