This drawing, along with the set of preparatory drawings for the rest of this series, formed part of the Carderera Collection and subsequently part of the Prado Museum, where it is currently housed.
This preparatory drawing shows three different groups of figures. One of these groups is situated in the centre of the composition and is made up of various monks who are fleeing a monastery. Their depiction in the final print is quite faithful to the preparatory drawing. Nevertheless, some changes are introduced in the final print in the two groups on either side of the central one: Goya reduces the number of figures and defines them more clearly, thereby creating more compact, well-defined groups of figures.
