Historia

It belonged to Aureliano Beruete y Moret (+1922), Madrid. In 1929 it belonged to the industrialist Rómulo Bosch i Catarineu (+1936), Barcelona. In 1934 the entire Bosch i Catarineu collection was deposited in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, as collateral to save his bankrupt textile company. In 1950 Julio Muñoz Ramonet (+1991) took over the company and the collection. Upon the death of Muñoz Ramonet, a long litigation began over his legacy, the sentence of which recognized the Barcelona City Council as the owner. By court order this painting was deposited in 2017 in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia.

Análisis artístico

See the previous painting, The Arrival of the Virgin of the Pillar to Zaragoza and apparition to the apostle Santiago for the iconography.

The scene of the Coming of the Virgin marks the central axis of the composition, framed with a large golden halo, it is also surrounded by angels. In the lower right part is Santiago Apostle, characterized by the staff he holds with his left arm and the pilgrim's shells that surround his shoulders. Unlike the Apostle in The Coming of the Virgin of Pilar to Zaragoza and the appearance of the Apostle Santiago located in the foreground, in this scene we find him at the same level as the rest of the characters.

It is a very luminous painting with more vibrant colors than other versions of the same scene.
