Bulls in the Meadow (Toros en la dehesa)
5 y 9 ("5 and 9", on the back).
See The Greasy Pole.
This work left Spain after it was sold by the Duke and Duchess of Osuna, entering the collection of the Hungarian M. de Nemes. Its current location is unknown.
This was the largest painting in the series and Goya was paid 4,000 reales for it.
For the analysis of the whole series, see The Greasy Pole.
Goya's description of this painting on his bill read: "1...a number of bulls rounded up, with several figures, on horseback and on foot, and the bulls completing the composition, with its corresponding landscape". Distributed more or less horizontally across the canvas, we see all of the people featured in this large painting, with the building visible on the right-hand side behind them. On the right there are several people on horseback who are coming down towards the bulls, which are grouped together in the middle of the canvas. Also on the right-hand side, seated on a low stone wall, is a group of people engaged in an animated discussion in front of the animals. In the background, a distant hill can just be made out.
