This preparatory drawing for the etching in which Goya copies Velázquez's painting of Barbarossa is much the same as the finished work. Standing out against the intensely dark background is the figure of Philip IV's buffoon, dressed as a Turk, or at least dressed as he imagined a Turk should dress.
Goya's copy of this particular painting by the Sevillian artist has fewer complications in comparison with some of his other works that Goya worked on. The clothing has few folds and the background is completely neutral. Goya does not forget to include the shadow connecting the figure to the space around him, a device which serves to create the illusion of depth.
