Goya 1810 (en el ángulo inferior izquierdo).
See Sad presentiments of what must come to pass.
This drawing, along with the set of preparatory drawing for the rest of the prints in this series, formed part of the Carderera Collection and was subsequently acquired by the Prado Museum where it is currently housed.
The preparatory drawing Charity shows very few variations in comparison with the print of the same name. In this drawing, Goya prepares the print in detail, taking the time to carefully capture the naked bodies that are thrown into the mass grave and defining the postures of both the corpses and the people disposing of them. The drawing also shows the character that might be identified as a self-portrait, although in the preparatory drawing this aspect is less clear.
The only substantial difference between the drawing and the print is that the pit is rendered darker in the latter.
