This drawing, just like the set of preparatory drawings made for the other prints in the series, formed part of the Carderera collection before arriving at the Prado Museum, where it is currently housed.
This is probably the first of the two drawings Goya made in preparation for the etching Treat them, then on to other matters. In it, the head of the figure situated in the centre of the composition, his body being held up from behind, has fallen forwards, making it impossible to see his face, a detail which was to change in the final print. Furthermore, in the sketch the clothing worn by this figure is darker than in the print.
In the background of the drawing we can make out the lifeless bodies of the French soldiers but the trees seen in the print are not present here.
