Historia

See Sad presentiments of what must come to pass.

Just like the set of preparatory drawings made for the other prints in the series, this drawing formed part of the Carderera collection before arriving at the Prado Museum, where it is currently housed.

Análisis artístico

In this image, the second of the two preparatory drawings Goya made for etching no. 20 in the Disasters of War series, we can see the changes that were made to what was probably the earlier drawing, and that were kept for the finished print. The artist has included the trees in the background, their branches broken and dead. He has also changed the posture of the wounded man being held up from behind in the foreground. In the previous drawing his face was downturned, making it invisible to the viewer, but in this drawing and in the etching it is facing out at us. His clothes are now brighter, too, a device that reveals Goya's desire to underline this character's importance in the scene. The artist has also slightly modified the postures of the two men who are holding up the wounded man, correcting them to make them stronger and more balanced.

Conservación

This drawing features some signs of possibly having been passed through a press.
