Before entering the collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, this work was in the J. Montesinos collection, Valencia.
The subject appears seated before a dark background, elegantly dressed in an open frock coat that reveals the white shirt underneath which reaches all the way up to his chin and which provides the painting with some luminosity. His left hand is inside the shirt pocket, whilst his right hand is hidden behind him. According to Gudiol, the brilliant brushstrokes define the shape, the silky texture and the luminous reflections given off by the clothes.
The outline of the figure blends into the background, shrouding it in an air of mystery. The immediate foreground is the part that is the most brightly lit, whilst the shadows creep forward to invade the sitter's space. The face stands out for its great expressiveness, its penetrating gaze and its jovial appearance.
The work forms a pair with the portrait of the subject's wife, the Marchioness of Castrofuerte.
