The Marchioness of Castellfort (La marquesa de Castellfort)
Before entering the collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, this work was in the J. Montesinos collection, Valencia.
This three-quarter length portrait shows the marchioness in front of a neutral background and dressed in an elegant overcoat decorated with dots and a dark-coloured fur that covers her neck. We can only see one of her arms, which features pronounced foreshortening. In her hand she holds a closed fan. Her face is pale and has a melancholic look to it. Her hair is gathered up into a bun.
The work forms a pair with the portrait of the subject's husband, the Marquis of Castrofuerte.
According to Camón, this portrait is an extremely modern one, almost closer in feeling to Impressionism than to Romanticism.
Desparmet Fitz-Gerald is of the opinion that the sitter shown in this portrait is not the marchioness but rather another, unidentified woman.
