This drawing, like the set of preparatory drawings for the rest of the engravings in the series, was part of the Carderera collection and subsequently passed to the Prado National Museum, where it is now kept.
Despite the speed with which Goya produced this drawing, it clearly shows the basic characteristics of the engraving no. 82 This is the real thing for which it serves as a preparation. In the sketch, the peasant's face is somewhat more visible in three-quarter view, while in the engraving it is in profile and very darkened. It is likely that the painter decided to change the position of his face to emphasise the importance of the woman accompanying him. As can be seen in the print, she is also holding a hoe in her hand and has a bushy beard and long hair. Likewise, the drawing does not differ from the engraving in the depiction of the woman, the basket and the sheep, and the light surrounds the allegorical image and the tree in the upper right corner.
