This set of paintings on wood panel, whose authenticity is doubted by some academics, is difficult to date, since the paintings could have been produced either during Goya's last years in Madrid, or during his exile in Bordeaux. Gudiol believes that they may have been painted during the weeks in which the painter was in hiding at the house of José Duaso. Apart from this work, the group includes Execution of a Witch, The Duel, The Wounded Man, Bandits Killing a Group of People, and Carnival.
The first four of these belonged to the Lafitte collection in Madrid before they were acquired by the Pinakothek in Munich. The other two ended up elsewhere, as indicated in their respective records.
This set of small paintings on wood panel is reminiscent of the style displayed by the Black Paintings, and are also very similar to some of the drawings contained in Albums C and F, which date from the period just before the artist's exile to Bordeaux, France.
A series of figures are seated around another who is standing, probably on a chair. The figure has been identified as a monk preaching, while the women who accompany him would be his devout followers, who cover their heads with veils and also adopt a position of prayer.
The ochre and dark tones employed by Goya for this enigmatic scene, as well as the dense brushstrokes, are reminiscent of the aforementioned Black Paintings.
