The drawing passed by inheritance in 1828 to Javier Goya, the painter's son, and in 1854 to Mariano Goya y Goicoechea, the artist's grandson. It was subsequently owned by Valentín Carderera (Madrid, ca. 1861), Isidoro Brun (before 1879?) and Pedro Fernández Durán (1897?), who bequeathed it to the Prado Museum by testamentary disposition on 6 July 1923. Following acceptance of the donation, the drawing entered the Prado Museum by Royal Order of 31 March 1931.
This drawing, framed by a light border in sanguine, shows a male figure with a cadeverous head that could be interpreted as a brief preparatory sketch of the main character of the drawing Dream 16. Only the head of the figure is finished. The rest of the body, slightly titled to the left, is barely sketched, and several regrets are also shown.
This sketch was made on the back of the drawing To whom the Ghost will look.
