In the 19th century, this work belonged to the Madrid antiquarian Rafael García, later entering the Durand-Ruel collection in Paris and New York. In 1913 it was sold to Martin A. Ryerson of Chicago. It was bequeathed by the Ryerson family to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1933.
This portrait of Máiquez was presented for the first time as a work by Goya in the Madrid exhibition Goya in Times of War (Goya en tiempos de guerra). Prior to this exhibition it was considered a non-autograph version of the original, belonging to the Prado Museum.
A detailed analysis of the support shows that the canvas was reused.
Executed rapidly, the portrait is made using loaded brushstrokes for the face and finer, freer brushstrokes, with smaller quantities of paint, for the frock coat. A mere touch of paint in a paler tone denotes the existence of the sofa upon which the subject is seated.
