Historia

This work came from the collection of the Marquis of San Adrián. The Regional Government of Navarre acquired it from the marquis' heirs in 1950. It entered the collection of the Museum of Navarre in 1966.

Análisis artístico

José María de Magallón y Armendáriz, Marquis of San Adrián and Castelfuerte (Tudela, 1763-Madrid, 1845) was descended from an aristocratic Navarre family.

He married María de la Soledad Fernández de los Ríos, IV Marchioness of Santiago, whom Goya also painted José María was named academician of the Royal Academy of San Fernando.

Here he is depicted outdoors, in front of a landscape. He is standing, leaning with one arm on some blocks of stone, on to which his shadow is cast. The marquis is dressed for riding, with a black frock coat, a white shirt that goes right up to his chin underneath a white waistcoat with a wide collar, yellow trousers and boots with spurs. In his left hand he holds a small book, whilst his right holds a riding whip and rests on his hip.

Gudiol describes the face in this highly personal portrait as both likeable and haughty, straightforward and domineering.

This work recalls English neoclassical portraiture.
