The celebrated bullfighter José Romero, dressed in the fine attire given to him by the Duchess of Alba, with a cap
This painting belonged to the collections of the Infante Don Sebastián and the Duke of Ansola.
A member of an important bullfighting family, José Romero was the brother of Pedro Romero, whose portrait Goya also painted. Born in Ronda in Málaga in 1751, he rivalled his brother in the bullring for some time. In this half-length portrait he is depicted wearing a traje de luces ("suit of lights") in various colours, dominated by the red of the cape he wears over his shoulder. The details of the embellished sleeves and shirt are executed with swift, impasto brushstrokes. His young, manly face expresses his self-confidence and an awareness of the dangers of his profession. As always, Goya captures the personality of his sitter superbly.
