Goya possibly made this sketch in preparation for the definitive work of the same title, Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes, around 1796 or 1797. It is known that this piece belonged to the Iruretagoyena collection in Seville and the Jimeno y Fernández Vizarra collection in Madrid.
The last known record of this painting is that it was sold at the Lempertz auction house in Cologne on 27 to 28 November 1935 (lot no. 146). The current location of this work is unknown.
This sketch or first draft was executed with a rapid, impasto technique and violent brushstrokes.
It is much more compact and symmetrical than the final piece, with a greater number of large figures placed in the foreground. Likewise, the landscape in the background is simpler in this version.
In general this sketch is more muddled than the final painting, in which the figure of Christ has undergone a number of changes to ensure he stands out among the other characters.
