See Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, Painter.
It came from the Cristóbal Ferriz collection and passed to the National Library in 1876.
A preparatory drawing of this engraving is in the Prado Museum.
A woman is lying on the floor of a prison with shackles on her feet and stockings rolled up around her ankles. Her legs are half bare and her face is hidden under her arm. Next to her is a jug and an iron ring hanging from a wall built of large blocks of stone. In the background is a low door closed with large bolts.
The print is executed entirely in four-tone aquatint. The woman's legs are burnished and her torso is retouched in black pencil.
The architectural structure is more complex than those recreated in other engravings in The Caprices, most of which lack spatial references. In this sense it is possible to propose some images from Carceri d'Invenzione (1745-1760) by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Mogliano Veneto, Treviso, 1720-Rome, 1778) as a visual source for this engraving.
This unique proof, which was not included in the published collection of The Caprices, could have been a first version for Caprice no. 32, Because it was sensitive, although it also has some analogies with no. 34, Sleep Surrenders.
The film is cropped 2 mm from the image, almost to the print.
