Historia

This work came from the collection of W.G. Russell Allen (Boston, 1882-1955), who bequeathed it to the Museum of Fine Arts in 1974.

Análisis artístico

This preparatory drawing for the etching The custody of a prisoner does not call for torture is the other way round to the finished work. Goya made no changes to the print, and the posture is the same as in this drawing. The physical characteristics of the figure also remain the same, along with his clothing and the arrangement of the space, with a window in the background.

This drawing was most likely simply traced or copied freehand onto the copperplate.
