The painting, which had been transferred to canvas, passed to the collection of the Count Alessandro Contini-Bonacossi of Florence, very probably via the London gallery of Thomas Harris. The work is listed in the catalogue of the Caponi Palace and the inventory of the Villa Vittoria in Florence where it was exhibited in the Goya room. However, it did not form part of the Contini-Bonacossi donation to the Italian state in 1969 currently on display in the Uffizi Museum. Its current location is unknown.
For further information see The Dream of Saint Joseph.
According to a written description by Ricardo del Arco (1915), this painting was located on the right-hand wall of the oratory opposite The Drean of Saint Joseph (El sueño de San José).
The scene represents the visit of the Virgin Mary to her cousin, Saint Elizabeth. Elizabeth is shown on the left receiving the Virgin before a building. She has her left arm on Mary's shoulder, her right hand taking Mary's hand. Mary touches her pregnant belly with her free hand. Zechariah watches the scene from the middle ground.
The composition is based on an original work by Carlo Maratta (1625-1713) produced around 1661-64 for the Chigi Chapel of Siena Cathedral. The artist himself produced a copy of the work in print form which served as a model for many artists.
