La Tirana / por Goya. a 1799 ("La Tirana, by Goya, 1799", in lower left-hand corner).
This work was donated to the Academy of San Fernando by Teresa Ramos, the cousin of "La Tirana", in 1816.
Five years after painting the half-length portrait of the famous actress Goya painted this full-length one, showing María del Rosario Fernández in an outdoor setting in the background of which we can make out an iron railing and a fountain. She is wearing an elegant white gauze dress with a pronounced neckline, accompanied by a reddish stole with golden detailing matching that of the dress. The artist's rapid execution is clear to see in his rendering of these clothes. The subject is also wearing some white shoes, in the style of the period.
For more biographical information, see María del Rosario Fernández, "La Tirana".
