This work, along with the others in the series, belonged to the collection of the Duke and Duchess of Aveyro, in Madrid. Its current whereabouts are unknown.
When the people of Israel were dying of thirst on their way through the desert, God brought forth water from a rock by asking Moses to smite the rock with his staff. When nothing happened, the prophet, in his impatience, struck the rock a second time and the water gushed out, and the people and their livestock were able to quench their thirst. The Lord punished Moses for not having had faith in the first blow against the rock by not allowing him to enter the Promised Land (Numbers 20:1-13).
For the artistic commentary on the series as a whole, see Moses and the Brazen Serpent.
