La duquesa de Alba recogiéndose el pelo
COLECCION DEL Sº. Dº. V. CARDERERA / ADQUIRIDA POR EL GOBIERNO EN 1867 (wet stamp, lower right-hand corner).
See Young woman with forehead wearing a small hat
Line of provenance: Javier Goya, Mariano Goya, Valentín Carderera, National Library of Madrid.
Veáse Joven de frente tocada con un sombrero pequeño.
Carderera assumed that it represented the Duchess of Alba and described her as follows: richly dressed, looking up at the sky with the desperation of one of Niobe's daughters, tearing out her hair. The hair, dark and very long, down to her waist, corresponds to some comments about the duchess made by contemporary chroniclers. Her temperamental temperament was well known at the time, which is consistent with the supposition that Goya would have wanted to capture her here in a temper tantrum. In fact, Tomás de Iriarte wrote the comedy Miss Spoiled apparently inspired by her. However, Mena considers that the woman depicted by Goya is more theatrical in nature and identifies her with the successful actress of the time, María del Rosario Fernández, the "Tirana", whom he portrayed in 1794 and 1799. Some light strokes in black pencil mark other possible positions of the figure's left arm.
On the back of the sheet is the drawing Young Woman Washing at the Fountain.
